Hey everyone, this is Owen with Motion Array and in this tutorial, I’ll be showing you how to animate a line in After Effects. Alright, let’s get started!
How to Animate a Line in Adobe After Effects
Download our Under The Influence Script here!
Download the project file here!
Download the map image here!
So, in this case, we’ll be drawing a line from one point to another on a map. If you’d like to learn how to make a 3D map like this you can check out our tutorial on how to create an unfolding map animation. In this particular case, the line needs to be drawn in the map precomp so that it can keep the same 3D transformations as the map. Double click to open the map precomp. Inside the precomp there are two guide layers that mark the start and end points of the line and the map itself.
Making sure no layers are selected, use the pen tool to draw out a line from one point to the other. Once done, adjust the style of the line to your liking (I did 20 px wide and a blue color). You may also need to delete or turn off the fill. Rename this shape layer “Line”. Using the add menu for the shape layer add a Trim Paths. In the Trim Paths settings change the End to 0% and set a keyframe at frame 0. Move the playhead to frame 60 and change the End value to 100%. Highlight both keyframes and apply an Easy Ease. The last thing to do is make the Line layer 3D.
Navigate out to the main composition and the line should be animating nicely and in 3D!
