How To Change Music Length in Premiere Pro

In this tutorial we explore how to manually change the length of your music to match your video.  This can be done through the essential sound panel by changing the desired duration of the music.  However, if this length is too great a difference from the original length of the music your resulting sound can be distorted and strange.  If this is the case, a different method will be needed.

It is possible to cut out or duplicate sections within your music clip in order to lengthen or shorten your overall music file.  What’s more is that this can be done without the audience even being able to detect cuts or manipulation.  To start, you need to establish what sections of the music you want to either duplicate or remove.  Once you’ve found these, locate the nearest downbeats on either side of the desired music section.  Make a cut with your razor tool on each of the downbeats, and then delete or duplicate the resulting middle section.  Once this has been done, make sure any gaps are filled between music clips.

From here, your music cuts might still be audible and distracting.  To address this, move one of your music clips to a separate layer and overlap the two layers on either side of the cut.   This will allow you to see the audio waveform and will help you to see visually if your clips are off in terms of timing. Take your outermost audio clip and use it to make any shifts in timing.

Finally, once all that has been done it can be really effective to fade in and out each of your audio clips so that the change between them is more gradual.  To do this you can either add a cross-fade or manually keyframe the opacity on each clip.

Congratulations! You’ve now manually changed the length of your music to match the length of your video!  Using this method you can also cut and splice sections of your music if they don’t feel like they properly match the visuals that are being displayed.  Doing this allows for your visuals to dictate how the music sounds, rather than the other way around.  Ultimately this technique gives you flexibility to make your project your own.  So try it out and see what you can do!
