Tutorial: Create a Glossy Logo in Premiere Pro

Premiere Pro 01/12/2018 2 min read

With this short tutorial, we’ll show you how to create a glossy logo look all inside of Adobe Premiere Pro. There’s no need for After Effects for this one, and we’re drawing inspiration from one of our logo templates. Let’s dive in!

How to Create a Glossy Logo

Step 1: Set Up Your Timeline

  1. Import your logo into Premiere Pro.
  2. From the Project panel, create a New Sequence, and click OK.
  3. Now drag your logo into the timeline and you might want to zoom in a bit.

Step 2: Add Color to the Logo

  1. Click on Effects > Ramp, and drag it onto the logo to apply it.
  2. Under Effect Controls, change to Radial Ramp
  3. Now select your preferred colors. For example, you could make the End Color black and the Start Color a steel blue. Ultimately, you can change this to whatever you want.
  4. Then, drag the Start of Ramp and End of Ramp colors down a bit.
  5. Next, head on back to the Project panel, add a title (such as “Logo”).
  6. Then, drag this logo into another sequence (and rename to something like ‘Logo 2’). This is the sequence where all of the magic is going to happen!

Step 3: Create a Sheen Layer

  1. The next thing you’ll do is create a new Color Matte, then click OK.
You’ll probably want to make this white, or whatever other color you need for your particular video project.
  2. Name your matte something like “Sheen.”
  3. Drag the “Sheen” layer into your timeline above the logo.
  4. Go to Effects > Ramp, and apply this to the Sheen track.
  5. With Sheen highlighted, under Motion, rotate it on an angle, and set a couple of keyframes for its position. For example, about 8 seconds in you could move it all the way across.
  6. Next, nest your “Sheen” layer. To do this, right-click on it, and select Nest. You could call this “Sheen Nest.”

Step 4: Refine the Sheen Over the Logo

  1. Apply an effect on this sheen layer. Under the Effects, search Set Matte and apply that to the sheen layer.
  2. Under the Effect Controls, adjust Take Matte From Layer and switch it to Track 1. Basically, what that’s doing is using the alpha channel from track 1 as the matte for the sheen layer.
  3. Next, under Opacity, change it from Normal to Linear Dodge (Add). Decrease its Opacity a bit if it’s too bright.
  4. At this point, you should have a nice glossy, sheen looking effect on your logo! Almost there!

Step 5: Apply the Find Edges Effect (Optional)

  1. To take your logo to the next level, duplicating the logo layer, and applying an effect called Find Edges
  2. Under the Effect Controls, check Invert on under Find Edges. At this point, your logo should have an outline look.
  3. Change the Blending Mode to Screen. Now, you should see a nice highlight around the logo.

Step 6: Apply a Linear Wipe (Optional)

  1. To take it a set further yet, head on to Effects > Linear Wipe.
  2. Next, under the Effect Controls, set Transition Completion to about 50%, and change the Wipe Angle to rotate it a bit, and Feather it out.
  3. Voila! You should have a really nice glossy logo look going on!

That’s it! You’ve now learned the steps to create a glossy logo effect in Premiere Pro. In no time, you can create this look yourself to add some shine to a logo opener!
